AHWAHNEE  is just a short distance from Grub Gulch, once one of the most productive gold mining areas in this section of the Southern Mother Lode, but its people found more riches in farming.

Shorthly after the Gold Rush began, early settlers grew fruit and vegetables for the nearby mining camps.  Its orchards still yield mountain apples, and cattle ranches are productive.  Cattle drives still may be seen as foothill ranchers move stock to summer pastures in the high country.

An active community advisory council is working to preserve the easy, rural atmosphnere with housing developments featuring acreage.  Establishment of an community college is anticipated.
